What is r/place?
r/place was a virtual event organized by Reddit in 2023, 2022 and 2017 that allowed users to place pixels on a shared digital canvas. The event ran from July 20 to July 24 in 2023. During the event, which lasted 72 hours, users could edit any of the one million pixels (1000×1000) in the canvas by placing a tile of one of 16 colors. After a cooldown period of five to twenty minutes, they could place another tile. The canvas was blank initially but quickly filled with a wide variety of drawings and text. A few users coordinated efforts to create large works, such as flags or symbols. The experiment was ended by Reddit administrators on April 3, 2023.
I was a key developer of the placeTR community, which represented Turkey at the 2023 r/place event. This experience gave me the opportunity to develop both my technical and social skills.
Communities we worked with:
- r/turkey
- Porçay
- Air Çağlar (Alper Çağlar)
- Jahrein
- Polat Jalemdar
- NautaVeters
- AurumK
- Order (Emir Nergiz)
Future plans:
Our future plans include participating in a future r/place event with a more user-friendly interface and better infrastructure. We also plan to collaborate with more communities to increase r/place’s representation in Turkey.
